On the afternoon of Monday, 9 December Whakaari/White Island, a popular place to visit via boat or helicopter in our region (Bay of Plenty), erupted, killing 17 people, with 2 others missing, presumed dead.
This is a great tragedy for all those involved and our hearts go out to everyone who has been impacted. The tourism industry in New Zealand is a tight knit industry and we know the operators involved will be devastated by what has happened.
In light of the events, we have reviewed our operations and continue to operate keeping passengers and visitors safety in the fore front of everything we do. We actively adhere to the Health & Safety regulations and are certified by Qualmark.
We do visit active geothermal areas, however deem risks to visitors to be manageable as long as people follow instructions and keep to pathways. We also only work with reputable providers.
Waitomo Adventures operates under the Adventure Tourism regulations and are certified with WorkSafe via QualWorx.

The Waimangu part of the tour in particular blew me away. Wasn't expecting the valley trail to be so beautiful. Thomas, my tour guide for the day, was kind, gracious, and very knowledgeable - would definitely recommend his service and Thermal Land's tour package to everyone.
I thought we were just paying for a drive to a thermal destination so I was bowled over when our driver started his super informative and entertaining description of the landscape we passed and even pulled over for special photo ops. Akira you are fabulous!! Thank you for a wonderful day out!
