Whakaari/White Island tragedy
Our thoughts are with the people affected by the Whakaari/White Island Tragedy.
On the afternoon of Monday, 9 December Whakaari/White Island, a popular place to visit via boat or helicopter in our region (Bay of Plenty), erupted, killing 20 people.
This is a great tragedy for all those involved and our hearts go out to everyone who has been impacted. The tourism industry in New Zealand is a tight knit industry and we know the operators involved will be devastated by what has happened.
In light of the events, we have reviewed our operations and continue to operate keeping passengers and visitors safety in the fore front of everything we do. We actively adhere to the Health & Safety regulations and are certified by Qualmark.
We do visit active geothermal areas, however deem risks to visitors to be manageable as long as people follow instructions and keep to pathways. We also only work with reputable providers.
Waitomo Adventures operates under the Adventure Tourism regulations and are certified with WorkSafe via QualWorx.
What our other guests have said
At Waimangu things are organised really well and even though a couple of paths were closed due to flooding, they have shuttles with really friendly drivers to get you around in good time. The boat trip was absolutely brilliant and you must add it on if you can!
Nat, United Kingdom
Quite an amazing place! The shuttle was on time, Thomas, our driver, was so friendly and all the information he gave along the tour was really interesting and complete. Thank you Thomas!
Alejandra, Argentina
The Waimangu part of the tour in particular blew me away. Wasn't expecting the valley trail to be so beautiful. Thomas, my tour guide for the day, was kind, gracious, and very knowledgeable - would definitely recommend his service and Thermal Land's tour package to everyone.
